I am 45 years old and athletic, as I enjoy competing in mountain bike races and triathlons. I have noticed minor hip pain for several years, but starting about 3 years ago the pain in my left hip began to progress, and my mobility decrease, until I was at the point where I could not tie my left shoe, or cut my left toe nails.

I tried yoga, forcing my hip to do what it would not. My back became more flexible, but my hip locked up and got even worse. I visited an orthopedic surgeon, who gave me a diagnosis of FAI in my left hip, with a torn labrum. The surgeon did not recommend surgery due to my torn labrum, but told me I will likely need full hip replacement in 10 years. He recommended exercises to strengthen my posterior chain to delay that surgery. After this bad news, I spent about 40 hours researching FAI online. I came across Matt Hsu in this process.

His philosophy resonated with me, and I decided to give it a shot, so I purchased the FAI Fix, and began the program. I hired a personal trainer to help me with accountability on the exercises, I hired a massage therapist for weekly tissue work, and I spend hours stretching and using my foam roller on my legs. When I started, I could raise my left knee to 90 degrees, and nothing further, as it was blocked at the hip (as I now know, because my acetabulum was hitting my pelvis as my femur was pulled out of position by my quads and adductors). If I forced the knee higher, it was excruciatingly painful.

Now, after about 6 months, I can raise my left knee, unassisted, to about 105 degrees, with no pain. That is still noticeably less than my right hip’s mobility, but a radical improvement. I am simply training my muscles to properly hold my femur. It is arduous work, and I know it will take years, but now my 10 year outlook is increased mobility, not total hip replacement. Thank you Matt and Shane for your efforts. You have changed my life.
